Termite Control
February through October, three species behaving differently, and a contract whose renewal fee matters more than its headline…
Learn about Termite ControlCanopy road country, where the tree cover is unbroken and the clay beneath it never gets direct sun. Buildings out here stay damp on one side all year, and that side is where an inspection ought to begin.
The road out to Miccosukee is one of the canopy roads, a tunnel of live oak that closes overhead for miles, and the community at the end of it sits on rolling Red Hills clay near Lake Miccosukee. Heavy permanent shade is the first thing that shapes the work. Ground under that canopy dries slowly, buildings stay damp on their shaded side, and leaf litter accumulates against walls faster than anyone keeps up with, all of which suits smokybrown roaches, subterranean termites and wood-decay fungus. The lake is the second. It is shallow and its level moves a long way between wet and dry years, so the mosquito picture on a given property changes from season to season rather than staying put. Wildlife pressure is continuous rather than seasonal because there is woodland on most sides. Properties here are large and often old, with outbuildings, and the outbuildings matter as much as the houses do.
Eastern subterranean termites are native and widespread across north Florida, and a spring swarm around Miccosukee is the seasonal signal worth watching for.
The build in Miccosukee runs to older farm and country houses on large parcels, with scattered newer build, and it matters more than the products do. Clay under much of this area holds summer rain against a foundation for days, and wood that stays damp is the whole reason subterranean termites bother with a building at all.
Anywhere near Lake Miccosukee and Ochlockonee headwater creeks, the lowest part of a building carries more humidity than anything else on the plot. Roaches, silverfish and camel crickets track that damp indoors, and treating them without drying the source out means treating them again.
Continuous canopy shade over clay ground keeps the soil and the shaded side of buildings damp for most of the year. Homes around Miccosukee deal with pest pressure that eases through December and January but never fully shuts off the way it would farther north.
Foundation type, lot size, and how much clay sits under the ground around Miccosukee all change what a job is quoted at.

It changes mosquito pressure completely, and it is not something you did. Lake Miccosukee is shallow and its level swings a long way with rainfall. A full lake keeps the margin and the low ground near it productive. A low lake exposes ground that grows up and then holds water in pockets and old channels, which is worse for some addresses and better for others. Treating the property is still worth it in either state, and expecting the same result each year is not realistic.
It is causing them, and it is also the reason people live out here, so the answer is management rather than removal. Permanent shade means slower drying, wetter soil against foundations, thicker leaf litter and higher humidity in crawl spaces. That combination is what feeds fungus, termites and the large roaches that live in litter and mulch. Keeping litter cleared off the walls, mulch pulled back, gutters emptying properly and limbs off the roofline gets most of the benefit and leaves the canopy alone.
On a property out here, usually yes. Barns, workshops and sheds sitting on the ground or on low piers are frequently the first structures termites reach and the permanent home of whatever rodents you find in the house. They also collect the stored timber, cardboard and equipment that give both a reason to stay. A plan that covers the house and ignores everything else on the parcel is treating the symptom that happened to be noticed first.
Bed bugs do not care about seasons. With Florida State University, Florida A&M and Tallahassee State College cycling students through rentals every term, moving boxes and secondhand furniture keep turning up as the real source around Miccosukee rather than the calendar.
